On Monday, 20 March, our inaugural Montessori Model United Nations (MMUN) delegates returned from the MMUN conference in New York City.
In a first for BMS, 16 students and 3 staff spent 7 nights in New York. They were based near Times Square on Broadway, Manhattan, to partake in the multi-day global education simulation experience.
The program enables students in Upper Primary and Middle Schools to learn about the operations of the United Nations (UN) and its role as the world’s largest international peacekeeping and humanitarian organisation.
The significance and pedagogical alignment of this opportunity is that Dr Maria Montessori supported the work of the League of Nations and its successor, the UN, as a forum where peace could be created.
She recognised that hope for peace lay in the education of children. Since 2006, MMUN has partnered with the UN to create this program for Montessori students who, at the sensitive period for reason, justice, and morality, can participate in this life-changing experience.
We strongly believe in the program and the benefits of overseas, independent (from family/carers) travel for our adolescents and plan to participate in this program annually.
