Jacaranda Library
“The greatest sign of success for a teacher is to be able to say, "The children are now working as if I did not exist.”
Dr Maria Montessori
The Brisbane Montessori School (BMS) library is a favourite amongst our students and offers a safe and quiet space to read, play, and study, where every student is welcome.
The Jacaranda library hosts over 10,000 books, complete with research computers, spacious reading nooks and desk space for students. The library also has a spacious verandah with plenty of seating for outdoor learning and reading. This space often plays host to an array of performances and events throughout the year.
At our library, students’ independence is a very important part of their library lessons. In keeping with the Montessori philosophy, students are encouraged to borrow and return books on their own and are given the responsibility for managing their own library time. Our full-time Librarian, is always available to assist students with book suggestions, reading and research, and as a guide during family friendly hours.
Story Dogs
Once a week during term time, BMS is proud to offer selected students in Lower Primary the opportunity to read to their very own story dog, Coco and her handler, Anna. Coco is a Black ‘Retrievador’ (Golden Retriever cross Labrador), and sits quietly while students read to her on the library deck. These one-on-one reading sessions allow students to relax and enjoy their reading in a dog’s company, without any feelings of peer pressure or judgement. This fantastic initiative is part of Story Dogs Australia and we thank Coco and Anna for volunteering their time to assist our students in their learning goals.
